When does the Bronx start burning?

Like a lot of people, I sat down to watch The Bronx is Burning last night at 10 p.m., only to find the All Star Home Run Derby in progress. It kept going, going, going for what seemed an eternity, but was actually another hour. That, however, was late enough to delay until 11 p.m. – bedtime for my 12-year-old son – the first installment of ESPN’s version of the Jonathan Mahler book about the 1977 Yankees. Even though it’s summer my son still needs to get up early for summer camp. Of course he didn’t want to go to bed because he was eager to watch the crazy antics of this amazing team that I had told him about, a team that brought a World Series win back to New York after 15 years.
What were they thinking at Major League Baseball, ESPN, or whoever makes these decisions? You figure the two hours they had scheduled for Home Run Derby should have been enough time for what is supposed to be a simple and fun-side show to this evening’s All-Star Game. But like much of American sports, the Home Run Derby has become as bloated as a steroid-using slugger. And though Burning is a movie about baseball and not baseball, last night’s delay reminded of how baseball in general seems to be turning its back on kids and families. The biggest complaint I hear from people with kids is that so much of post-season baseball takes place at night, too late for younger children to watch. But somehow, Major League Basebal continues to get away with this family-friendly image.
So how late do you think tonight’s All-Star game will go? I’m betting 12:10 a.m. – unless it goes extra innings. No more bets after 9 p.m., please.

I agree with you completely.
Baseball has long since ceased to be a family friendly sport. Astronomical ticket prices have made it prohibitively expensive for most families to take their kids to many games, and the post-season games run very late in their quest to bring in as large a national audience as possible.
The problem with all sports today is too much money. That can be as big a problem as too little money. Even with all the complaints that we and many others have voiced, the major teams have no trouble filling their stadiums and attracting large revenues due to high viewership of their games.
I still wonder though whether making baseball so unfriendly toward kids isn’t very shortsighted. It is in childhood that emotional attachments to these sports are established, and it is those emotional attachments that fills the financial coffers of the teams when those kids become adults with their own money.
Demographically, it is my perception that baseball is in decline. Children play soccer far more than they did, and the days when every kid was on a baseball team seem to have passed. Basketball and football have both done a very good job of attracting younger fans, while baseball fans seem to be aging, at least in my perception.
I vividly remember the 2000 subway series, when the games in New York ran until very late at night in order to accomodate west coast viewers (who didn’t watch anyway because the series was 2 New York teams). It was a major inconvenience for the fans.
Personally, I hate night games. They’re nowhere near as much fun as day games, in my opinion.
BTW, did you know the NY Post is running a series this week on the summer of 1977, covering not only the Yankees’ winning season that year, but other events that summer, such as the notorious blackout, the Son of Sam killings, the city tottering on the edge of bankruptcy? It is an interesting trip down memory lane.
There was a time, Len, when baseball was kid-friendly, as we both well know. My son loves Jeter, loved Bernie, and has taken to ARod in pinstripes. So he’s really trying to keep embracing his dad’s love affair with the game. Last night we watched as much of the home run derby as I could keep him up for, and we simply ran out of time.
It worries me that my son won’t develop the same affection for baseball that I did as a kid because these games end so late. I don’t think he’s ever seen an entire World Series game because they’re all played at night these days.
And next year I want to take him to a game or three for The Stadium’s last season before the new ballpark. I should start saving now.
What happened to our game?
American League just beat the National League 5-4 in a game that ended at midnight. How many kids saw the game to the end. My 12-year-old didn’t.
I can’t disagree with either of you about how baseball seems to be turning its back on kids.
Daytime World Series games were much more of a community event when I was a kid. I remember a barber shop in Queens would post the World Series scores inning by inning in its window. Later in high school, teachers would let us listen to a few innings of the game in class.
