Top five hidden home hazards

August
1

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission today has released a warning about the most dangerous products you might have in your home — but not perceive as dangerous:

No. 1: Magnets. If a child swallows more than one magnet, they can attract each other inside the body, causing holes, intestinal damage and even death. Since 2005, there has been one death and 86 injuries from magnets. Eight million magnetic toys have been recalled.

No. 2: Recalled products. Each year, about 400 products are recalled. Sign up for free e-mail notifications of recalls.

No. 3: Tip-overs. Furniture, appliances and TVs can tip over and crush children. If furniture isn’t stable, anchor it to a wall or the floor.

No. 4: Windows and coverings. Children can strangle on drapery and cord blinds. An average of 12 deaths a year are blamed on window cords. And about 3,7000 children are injured falling from a window.

No. 5: Pool and spa drains. Suction from a pool drain can seriously injure or kill a child. Every year, there are 15 injuries. (Just this summer, a 6-year-old lost her small intestine after getting caught in a drain in a wading pool. Her devastating injury is leading to action on a new law with tougher standards.)

Parents’ Place is a hangout for openly discussing the A’s to Z’s of raising a child in the Lower Hudson Valley. From deciding when to stop using a binky to when to let your teenager take driving lessons, Parents’ Place is here to let us all vent, share, and most of all, learn from each other.
Leading the conversation are Julie Moran Alterio, a business reporter and mom of a toddler, Jorge Fitz-Gibbon, a reporter and single father with joint custody of a 9-year-old son, and Len Maniace, a reporter and father of two sons.
