Anita Roddick, the founder of The Body Shop, died on Monday at age 64. A working mother of two daughters, Samantha and Justine, Anita opened the first Body Shop in 1976. At the time, the idea of making beauty products from natural ingredients like fruits and vegetables — and not testing them on animals — was radical. In the following decades, Anita became one of the most successful businesswomen in Britain, but never seemed to lose sight of her values or her devotion to all children, not just her own. She reportedly gave most of her fortune — tens of millions — to charities. She founded Children on the Edge in 1990 to help desperately needy children in Romanian orphanages. Here is one of her many wise quotes that I think is a worthwhile mantra for all parents: “I hope to leave my children a sense of empathy and pity and a will to right social wrongs.
