Julie Moran AlterioJulie Moran Alterio, her husband and baby girl — “Pumpkin" — share their Northern Westchester home with three iPods and more colorful plastic toys than seems necessary to entertain one tiny human. Julie, a senior business reporter, explores the intersection of technology, commerce and culture. Family photo project

March
21

Imagine taking a picture of each person in your family once a year in the same pose. Now imagine doing it for 25 years. That’s what Diego Goldberg of Buenos Aires, Argentina, did in an amazing photo essay. It starts in 1976 with Diego and his wife, Susy. In 1977, Nicolás comes into the world. [...]

Skittles update, sanity prevails

March
18

So, the eighth-grader who was punished with pretty harsh measures for buying a bag of Skittles from a classmate against school rules has been cleared of wrongdoing. Unfortunately, the reprieve didn’t come soon enough to allow him to attend an honor society dinner he missed as part of the punishment. If you didn’t see the [...]

Kids’ clothes, what’s reasonable?

March
18

So, last week I bought Pumpkin her first outfit of the spring: A darling sunflower dress with cute matching shoes and sweater at babyGap. My mom bought her the matching hat and purse. The price of all this cuteness? Let’s just say more than $100. Ah, but it’s her Easter outfit, you see. That’s how [...]

Do you pay more to go ‘Green’?

March
17

I’m doing a report in time for Earth Day on the cost of going “Green.” I’m hoping to explore the choices consumers make to spend more money on environmentally friendly products even though there are cheaper conventional alternatives. This can include everything from organic milk to CFLs to chlorine-free bathtub cleaner to the Toyota Prius.

As [...]

American-grown apple juice is hard to find

March
14

One day I am at the grocery store picking up a bottle of apple juice (very popular with the Pumpkin), and my usual brand-name juice is sold out. I look at the store brand and read the label more carefully than usual to make sure it doesn’t have added sugar, etc. I quickly notice a [...]

Honor student punished for buying Skittles

March
12

Michael Sheridan, an eighth-grader in Connecticut, bought a bag of Skittles in the hallway of his middle school. Because this is against school rules, he’s been suspended from school, will miss an honors student dinner and will have to give up his title as class vice president. You can read all about it in the [...]

So, today my child ate Play-Doh

March
10

I’m working on the computer, and Pumpkin comes over to me for a little visit. When she opens her mouth to talk, I see her tongue is kind of a blue-green. I ask her to stick out her tongue to get a better look, and wow, it’s really pretty colorful. I then say: “What did [...]

Books, books and more books

February
25

When I lived in Larchmont, my bookshelves were in harmony. I lived just two blocks from the library and satisfied most of my reading needs through borrowing. Plus, we had a one-bedroom apartment — there just wasn’t room to accumulate books. But now, we have a house and live 10 miles from the town library. [...]

Valentine’s Day in the world of parenting

February
14

Happy Valentine’s Day! It’s a big holiday for a lot of moms and dads out there — and not because they are celebrating a romantic occasion. In an earlier post on Valentine’s Day, I mentioned that I was writing a story for today’s paper about how the holiday is breaking out of the old definition [...]

Holiday lights

February
13

On a holiday shopping trip at Target in December, I just happened to look up on a high shelf and spot a really, really cute purple glitter Christmas tree that was just 2 feet tall. Purple happens to be Pumpkin’s favorite color — by far. Her room is purple, so that may be what triggered [...]

Who is having the play date?

February
12

So, I did it. I made a play date for today with a neighbor down the block who has a really cute 18-month-old son named Ethan. This might not seem remarkable to people who know me well and think of me as pretty outgoing, but the fact is: I have been very shy when it [...]

Who is getting your Valentine love?

February
6

I recently realized I have bought all of my daughter’s Valentine gifts — yes, that’s plural — and even my mom’s, but haven’t gotten one thing for my husband yet! It got me thinking: Is Valentine’s Day even about romance anymore? I looked into it a bit and found a survey that predicts the average [...]

A (tedious) solution to my e-mail disaster…

January
3

Yesterday, I told the story of how, through a computer glitch, I lost several years worth of e-mail that includes notes telling the story of Pumpkin’s life in all its little details and big milestone moments. This was pretty upsetting, as you can imagine. Well, I found a solution that has me somewhat relieved, [...]
